Why does AVIF need a server, when GIF, WebP, and MP4 don't?

No browser exposes an encoder for animated AVIF yet — it's a gap in current browser APIs, not a choice we made. We send your edited clip to our server to encode it with a real AVIF encoder, then delete it automatically once you've downloaded the result.

Is this still private?

Only your clip's pixels are uploaded, only after you explicitly click to start server processing, and only for as long as it takes to encode — nothing is kept afterward. If you'd rather everything stay on your device, GIF, WebP, and MP4 all encode fully locally.

How much smaller is AVIF really?

It depends on the content, but AVIF's modern compression typically produces meaningfully smaller files than GIF or WebP at a similar visual quality — closer to what you'd expect from a modern video codec than from GIF's older palette-based approach.

Video to Animated AVIF

AVIF beats GIF, WebP, and MP4 on file size at comparable quality, but no browser can encode animated AVIF locally yet — so this is the one tool on Framimo that isn't purely local. You'll trim and edit your clip in the browser as usual, then explicitly opt in to a server round trip for the final encode. Your source file is deleted from our server automatically once the export finishes.
